I began my career as a teacher over 20 years ago in Muncie , Indiana. At the time the teaching profession had very few teaching positions in New York State. I decided to travel to Indiana and worked for a year as an Instructional Assistant in a kindergarten classroom in Lebanon, Indiana. At that time there was no “reciprocity” between states and therefore I had to take the Praxis exam before I could be certified. In 1997 after a year of working at a rural elementary school, as a kindergarten assistant I attended an Indiana job fair for new teachers. It would be in this moment of being in the right place at the right time where a principal gave me the opportunity to be a first grade teacher! This decision on her part would begin a journey of a lifetime!
I taught in Indiana for four years before returning to my home state of NY , where I taught for 5 years before leaving to head to VA! I have taught in VA for Fairfax County Public Schools for 10 years as a reading specialist. I was feeling cosmopolitan and decided to join the legions of DC public school teachers in Southeast DC. It was one of the most dangerous neighborhoods I had ever taught in. . I resigned my position at DC Public Schools, a decision I do not regret and am thankful I was able to leave. In May of 2017, I accepted a position teaching third graders just outside DC. Now it is time to begin again with new challenges and professional growth. I recently completed my Masters +30 that led to my ELT Endorsement and SPED Endorsement to be added to my Virginia teaching licence.
Where will teaching take me next? Where will my heart call me? Stay tuned! January 2021
